The History and Advantages of Polyvinyl Chloride
The History and Advantages of Polyvinyl Chloride
September 12, 2019

As specialists in the design of clear packaging solutions, one of the thermoplastic polymers we find to be most adaptable for a host of packaging dimensions is polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

This piece will outline how PVC came to be, and how scientific advancements played a fundamental role for its prevalence today:

A Brief Look Back at the PVC Story

The precursor monomer, vinyl chloride, to the now famous PVC was first discovered in 1835 by Libeg and Regnault. However, it wasn’t until the turn of the century where important scientific advances were made - particularly by Fritz Klatte, a German chemist responsible for laying the foundation for the mass production of PVC.

After several patents were put into place – and subsequently lapsed - surrounding the polymerisation of vinyl chloride, the practicality of PVC as a product surfaced when it was heated; demonstrating flexibility that was reminiscent of rubber or leather. This was a particularly important progression in materials technology during World War II, as shortages of rubber paved the way for the scalability of PVC into areas such as cable insulation.

What Sets PVC Apart?

One of the key drivers behind the prevalence of PVC throughout the world is in its cost-effective manufacturing, especially compared to other plastics. Not only this, its versatility, durability, care-free maintenance, and aesthetic capabilities has allowed it to satisfy the demands throughout a variety of sectors – particularly for the clear packaging of foods, as PVC is non-toxic and inert.

As we know, medical applications require stringent regulations in order to ensure a clinically safe environment; ideal for PVC usage.  This is because of its capacity to remain in a stable and predictable state, such as being non-flammable, having a low permeability to water vapour, and showcasing resistance to several corrosive chemicals.
